Dyer Island Cruises operates around the world famous Dyer Island where you might be fortunate to see the Marine Big 5 – the Southern Right Whale/Humpback/Bryde’s Whales, the iconic Great White Shark, the Cape fur seal (around 60 000 on Geyser Rock), the endangered African Penguin and various visiting dolphin species. The area is also home to a wide variety of seabirds.
You will arrive at The Great White House where we have a restaurant, bathroom facilities and curio shop. On arrival we will serve you coffee or tea with a muffin. In our conservation and education room, you will receive an in-depth briefing regarding the area that we operate in, our conservation work and safety. Every guest is equipped with inflatable life jackets and wet weather gear in case of cooler weather conditions. It is a short walk down to the harbour to enjoy an exhilarating trip on custom designed Dream Catcher. Our Southern Right Whale Season is normally from June – December, but for the rest of the year we are so fortunate to occasionally see some Humpback and Bryde’s whales in the area we operate in. Other stops include a visit to the shark cage diving vessels to view great white sharks and then head to Dyer Island for the penguins and seals. We may also spot one of three dolphin species that visit: the Common dolphin, the Humpback dolphin or the Indo-pacific bottlenose. We have an on board biologist and experienced crew and promise an educational, life changing experience.
After the trip on sea, guests come back to The Great White House for warm soup and bread while warming up in front of a cosy fire or in summer to enjoy the warm sun. A debriefing will follow and the trip footage can be bought.
The trip includes a visit to our newly build African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) either before or after the trip. Dyer Island Cruises supports and funds the Dyer Island Conservation Trust under which we have many conservation and community projects. Please be assured that if you book with us that ‘Your choice make a difference’ and you help us to fulfill our dream to ‘Discover and Protect’.
The Eco Marine Trip last for a maximum of 2 hours on the water. Guests need to be with us 45 minutes before the trip for registration, briefing and refreshments. Including the visit to APSS, this excursion in Gansbaai will be around 3-4 hours long. Weather permitting and depending on the tides this will be a full day trip.
On your way back to Cape Town, we will stop for about one hour in the beautiful Hermanus where you can have a walk around the beautiful art shops or enjoy a bite to eat or buy a unique handmade South African gift from one of the many boutique shops.
After a walk around in Hermanus, the shuttle will depart back to Cape Town.
