Midway between Johannesburg and Durban is a piece of land encircled by mountains with two private dams and a river running through it. It is on this idyllic spot that Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge is found. The venue takes its name from a unique part of the Northern Drakensberg that is shaped like an amphitheatre. But is not just the natural beauty that has people talking. The architecture is also fantastic. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone, thatch and wood, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings, surrounded by beautiful indigenous rockeries.
This is one of those places that you plan to stay at for one night and you end up staying a week. There is just so much to do here and then of course there is that spectacular view. From the lawn a picture postcard panorama takes in the entire Northern range from the Amphitheatre all the way to Cathkin Peak, enticing you to explore it! The Drakensberg is the premier hiking destination in South Africa and the Northern Drakensberg is regarded by many as the most dramatic section of all, with access to the highest country in the world, the biggest indigenous forest in the berg, the largest cosolidation of rock art in the world and the 2nd highest waterfall in the world. The Amphitheatre separates South Africa from Lesotho and it is here that the world famous Tugela Falls has its source, rising at Mont Aux Sources and then plunging down the 1km basalt wall, into Royal Natal National Park.
