Responsible tourism certification body, Fair Trade Tourism, has recently launched a video to raise awareness of the need to protect children from child sex tourism in South Africa. The video can be viewed at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dud6bAszINY
Fair Trade Tourism represents South Africa at The Tourism Child Protection Code of Conduct (The Code), an international drive to protect children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism. It is based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
As both tourists and the tourism industry, we may not be aware of the threat to children from child sex tourists. This is something we may think happens elsewhere in the world, but research has found is happening in South Africa too. Regardless of statistics, any child involved in child sex tourism is one child too many. Please watch the video so that at least you can learn to spot the signs of children being exploited.
